Conservation Engineering for Timber can be a specialised area but knowledge of the behaviour of timber is an essential requirement for anyone likely to encounter structural timber.

As the Government is once again emphasising re-use and rejuvenation of the older town centres in particular, the role of timber and the assessment of its capacities in-situ will feature more and more in the engineer’s workload. With Protected Structures there are legal requirements to conserve but in any refurbishment project involving timber, it is better to assess and re-use wherever possible.
